While it sounds like you have likely addressed the nutritional concerns associated with a raw meat-based diet as summarized here: https://avmajournals.avma.org/view/journals/javma/243/11/javma.243.11.1549.xml?tab_body=pdf regulatory and liability concerns (including with environmental contamination) remain, so we still recommend that raw meat be cooked to a food safe temperature. We also acknowledge the benefits that are cited in this reference and that can be experienced with this popular feeding strategy. 
We appreciate your packaging feedback, we constantly look at improved packaging options and will continue to do so while meeting our environmental goals and regulatory requirements - a theme in our reply it seems!

We also work and have worked very hard to hold prices down, using your example of $68 in 2015 the inflation adjusted price would be over $92 (using the US Bureau of Labor Statistics CPI Inflation Calculator at https://www.bls.gov/data/inflation_calculator.htm# ). This far exceeds our current pricing in early September 2025. During that time many others have practiced 'shrinkflation', which we have not. During that ten year period, we have instead increased our standards from feed grade to food grade and finally to human dietary supplement grade with supporting third-party certifications with each transition. This significantly increased our raw material, insurance, staffing, training, certifying, and testing costs among others. Fortunately we were able to avoid passing all of those additional costs on through improved efficiencies and in some cases accepting no to very low margins as we are very aware of the uniqueness of our offerings and their vital role in the health of dogs and cats. We also expanded our return policy and available free recipe options during that time. As a now Certified B Corp (which also involved/involves additional costs), we are committed to all of our stakeholders and to remain fair in our pricing while sustainably providing the best overall quality we can. We sincerely appreciate your and others' support and understanding that any price increase we take is considered, taken reluctantly, and always justifiable.

We understand that home cooking with the proper fortification can become costly--especially when feeding multiple large dogs. We do our best to keep all of our prices as low as possible at all times for all of our customers. Our founder has co-authored multiple studies along with faculty at leading veterinary schools (e.g., J Am Vet Med Assoc. 2022;260(S3):S53-S60 ) that show that while home cooked food (aka human) grade diets may be less expensive than canned or wet feed (aka animal) grade food, they cost more than comparable kibble or dry feed grade commercially prepared diets. One of these may be worth exploring if you have not already.

For 19 years, we have consistently strived to keep prices low and fair, while never compromising product quality and safety. As a result, we have continued to grow, but have also incurred sustained and significant cost increases for raw materials, employee wages and benefits, insurance, software development & maintenance, third-party cGMP certifications, third-party product testing which includes for every essential nutrient we guarantee on labels, and shipping as well as general inflation. Overall we are confident that our ecosystem of technical expertise & support, free recipes, and human dietary supplement grade Balance It® supplements remain the best overall value and convenience possible. In multiple and relevant cases, we also offer the only all-in-one supplement appropriate to fortify homemade pet food for the nutritional management of certain medical conditions.

Gina, thank you for the “wonderful” compliment for Balance It® Canine. We’re glad to hear you “love” the product, but sorry that you’re not as satisfied with the packaging.

We’re not aware of any issues with the bags sealing when opened according to the instructions on the bag and in the shipping document included with every order. However, we understand that the larger 600-gram bags are inherently more difficult to open and close due to the legally required child-resistant closure (CRC).

Per federal law, we cannot recommend transferring the contents into a reusable and resealable container that you might prefer and like most cooks do for other bagged powdered cooking ingredients like flour or sugar. Legally, we must tell you that any container must have a CRC (aka “be childproof”) given its high nutrient content. This special packaging requirement protects against accidental ingestion of all of the contents at once by a child.

We continue to look for the best options for packaging and will keep your and others' feedback in mind as we do. For now, we believe this is the best option available while meeting both environmental and legal/regulatory concerns/requirements.

As a California Benefit Corporation and Certified B Corp, we are committed and held to the most sustainable practices. As widely reported, plastic recycling is unfortunately minimal at 5-6% in most municipalities and efforts to simply reduce plastic use have been suggested instead (see https://bit.ly/3SHpVf0). Thus, we decided to proactively develop a packaging solution that uses less plastic and invest in a new packaging line to support this change. By transitioning to bags instead of bottles, we have been able to reduce the plastic used by over 82%! Additionally, the new bags have a wider opening allowing the powder to be more easily accessed at the bottom.

As these bags must have an integrated child resistant closure (CRC) per federal law and combine two different types of plastic, they cannot be recycled, but we strongly believe this is the most environmentally friendly option until fully recyclable packaging becomes viable.
