You may wish to feed your pet a homemade diet or be forced to concoct one due to pet illness. The complexity of the web interface can be daunting, but personal support was available to get me started. Over two years ago my 13 year old mixed breed dog developed renal failure. Over the years prior pets have shown this diagnosis to be a death sentence. The mainstay of treatment is a low protein, low phosphorus diet, which is usually unpalatable. My dog refused to touch all of the pet store and prescription renal diets. I was forced to cook a homemade diet but wanted to ensure that it provided all essential nutrients. My vet suggested Balance It. After trying multiple combinations of various proteins with grains or pasta, we finally found one she wanted to eat. Balance It gave me a recipe incorporating those specific ingredients, along with necessary supplements.
I was worried that the supplement powder might taste bad, but she does not mind either the powder or added fish oil in the recipe.
My dog has thrived. Not only has her renal failure not progressed, but today actually has consistently improved with lower serum BUN and creatinine (measures of renal function) than when diagnosed more than two years ago. My dog has transitioned to his new diet with Canine K well. I like the scoop that came with the 1 pound bag so I don’t have to weigh the portion at meal time.

I have been using Balance IT and their recipe builder for 1.5 years. I started as my dog was diagnosed with heart failure and wouldn’t eat. Our pup was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease, stage 2, in Feb of 2022. With limited options for pre-made kibble we sought out a veterinary nutritionist who was able to provide us with a meal plan, needing a Balance IT powder to ensure meals are balanced and complete. I started slow with the amount added to the food. My dog did not like it at first. I had to make her food a bit more hydrated at start. I also saved it in the fridge to prevent the smell.
